Thwart the Photo Police

The feeling is really something. To walk into the Barnes & Noble at 555 Fifth Avenue and see it; your book, on the New Releases table, at Barnes & Noble, on Fifth Avenue, in New York!  Does it get much better for a first timer? Well, the front window would have been nice, but who’s complaining?

Admittedly I was excited, so much so I did the rarest thing for someone who is camera shy. I asked my wife to take out her iPhone and take a picture of me with a stack of my books. Then the moment was crudely interrupted. A rather massive and somewhat intimidating security guard shut us down. “No photography” he tells us disapprovingly. I felt like a criminal, just like the time I took a picture of the Mona Lisa at Musee’de Louve, in Paris. Apparently that isn’t allowed either!

This crushing moment is among many memories of the Healing at the Speed of Sound® book tour that kicked off in New York last October. Not one of the better memories mind you, but unforgettable. A better memory was that evening, which I spent celebrating the book launch with my co-author Don Campbell and my wife at Thomas Keller’s per se. I can still bring back the experience of the most delectable foie we enjoyed from my sensory memory.

The paperback came out last week and I’ve yet to go see it in store. You see, no book tour on the paperback release. So, if you happen to be in a Barnes & Noble and can snap a photo of Healing at the Speed of Sound in paperback for me, I’d happily send a free copy to the first fearless photographer to thwart B&N’s photo police.

If you succeed, post your pic to the Healing at the Speed of Sound Facebook Page wall and I’ll get the book to you. It will be well earned!

Healing at the Speed of Sound Paperback Giveaway

Would you like to win an autographed copy of my Bestseller Healing at the Speed of Sound®? Read on and I’ll tell you how!

Each author has their own reason to write. And the creative process is different for us all.  The motivation my co-author Don Campbell and I had for writing Healing at the Speed of Sound was to share that sound is an unrecognized pillar of health.  Our message… noise harms, and sound, music and silence can heal.  It seems our readers recognize the real impact sound has in their lives, and are taking control of the power of sound to improve their mind, body, and spirit!

Healing at the Speed of Sound was released in paperback by Plume this week, just a little over a year following the hardcover release. This milestone is bittersweet. You see, my good friend Don passed away earlier this year. He is on my mind as are memories of our nearly three years spent writing the book together.

Writing with Don was a remarkable process.  Don was a seasoned author who took me, the apprentice under his wing.  In his career Don wrote 23 books translated in nearly as many languages. Included among them the groundbreaking Bestseller The Mozart Effect®.  Don was conceivably the most creative person I have ever known; whereas, I tend more toward linearity.  He wrote with light speed, me, well… This post will take about an 90 minutes to write!  We combined his inspired genius with my practical mindset and penned a book that fused our shared interests and unique perspectives.

There were many memorable moments in our writing journey, but what sticks with me most is the trust Don had in me to share my ideas, merge them with his, and together craft a message that will forever hold great meaning for us both. There were times in the creative process I hit the wall, writers block! I could not extract the ideas in my mind to the written word. These were occasions I practiced what I teach and turned to my muse, music.

What music, artist or songs bring you creative inspiration? Share in the comments before noon mountain time on Tuesday, November 6th.  After I cast my vote I’ll select my favorite comments and pick two winners to receive an autographed copy of Healing at the Speed of Sound in paperback! The winners will be announced in the comments. Good luck!

Healing at the Speed of Sound En Francais

Les sons qui transforment votre vie

Quelle merveille! A package arrived at the office yesterday. And what was inside? A fantastic surprise, five copies of the French edition of Healing at the Speed of Sound®, translation- Les sons qui transforment votre vie.

What makes the French edition particularly special is that my dear friend and co-author Don Campbell loved France. He moved there from South Texas in his adolescence. At 13 he was the youngest student at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, studying under the much revered French composer, conductor, and teacher Nadia Boulanger. And, it was the visionary French physician Dr. Alfred Tomatis who influenced so much of Don’s work. While Don traveled the world extensively, the French culture seemed to resonate deep within him.

If Don were still here with us I’m sure he would be as thrilled as I to know our message of the transformative power of music and sound is growing each day, and is now reaching French speakers!

You can find Les sons qui transforment votre vie here.

The Universal Sense: How Hearing Shapes the Mind

Two days ago a fascinating book came out by my friend Seth Horowitz. The book is The Universal Sense: How Hearing Shapes the Mind.  Seth is a musician with a day job as a neuroscientist at an Ivy League University. He has a seemingly endless imagination and childlike curiosity for all things vibrational.   These attributes coupled with an uncanny ability to explain complex information with ease, and a wicked sense of humor, equip him a skilled writer who crafts an entertaining read!

About the book— Every day, we are surrounded by millions of sounds – ambient ones like the rumble of the train and the hum of air conditioner, as well as more attention-grabbing sounds, such as human speech, music, and sirens. But how do we process what we hear every day? And how does it affect our brains and our minds?  This book answers such revealing questions as:

  • How do bats see in 3D with their ears and how did that lead to the development of medical ultrasound?
  • What is it about the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard that makes us cringe?
  • Why do city folks have trouble sleeping in the country, and vice versa?
  • Why can’t you get that song out of your head?

Starting with the basics of auditory biology, neuroscientist and musician Seth Horowitz explains how sound affects us, and in turn, how we’ve learned to manipulate sound: into music, commercial jingles, car horns, and modern inventions like cochlear implants, ultrasound scans, and the mosquito ringtone. Whether you’re standing in a crowded subway or a quiet meadow, you’ll never hear the same way after reading this book. The Universal Sense gives new insight into what the sounds of our world have to do with the way we think, feel, and interact.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough, but so do others including Publishers Weekly. Here’s what they have to say…

Brown University neuroscientist Horowitz has pulled off an unusual feat. His science book, about the way hearing shapes the “evolution, development, and day-to-day function of the mind,” can be genuinely poetic. It is also laced with humor. Horowitz says he attempted less a text than a venue for imparting “wonder.” He succeeds, unearthing one little-known gem after another.

I should mention that Seth serves on the Scientific Advisory Board at Advanced Brain Technologies. He is working with us on a number of interesting projects with his partner at Neuropop, musician, composer, and technologist Lance Massey. Exciting things ahead!

Connect with Seth— Twitter, Facebook. Listen to a recording of a recent teleseminar he did with me for my monthly Sound Brain Fitness Series The Auditory Brain.

Watch for upcoming guest posts from Seth here at The Brain Understanding Itself.   Read  The Universal Sense.
